Product Hierarchy for Cementitious Materials
The
‘Cementitious materials’ (terminus technicus) are grouped and reported under
the segment termed ‘Segment Cement’
Ordinary
Portland Cement (OPC)
Ordinary Portland
cement is obtained by grinding clinker in combination with a set regulator. It
may further contain up to 5% of minor constituents (e.g. mineral components,
cement kiln dust and others).
Composite
Cement
Composite cement is
composed of ground clinker and set regulator and one or more cement
constituents (mineral components, cement kiln dust and others) in a total
amount of more than 5%.
Oil Well
Cement
Cement specifically
produced for use in oil well application, according to API 10A or similar
specifications.
Masonry
Cement
Cement/binder
specifically produced for masonry construction and/or mortar production, may
comply with specific masonry standards.
Special
Binders
Special binders are
tailor-made products for specific applications regardless whether they comply
with cement standards or not.
White Cement
White cement is
obtained from clinker, in which coloring elements are kept at a very low level
in order to achieve a high degree of whiteness.
Mineral
Components (MIC)
Mineral components
are cement constituents which are not derived from the clinker manufacturing
process (e.g blast furnace slag, fly ash, pozzolane, limestone and others). Set
regulator is not considered a mineral component.
Fly Ash
Fly ash is a finely
divided residue resulting from the combustion of ground or powdered coal in
coal fired power plants, which is transported by flue gases and collected by
electrostatic or mechanical separation.
Beneficiated
Fly Ash (BFA)
BFA is a fly ash
product which is utilized or commercialized after having been subjected to
beneficiation treatments like classification and separation of residual carbon
to improve its properties.
Granulated
Blast Furnace Slag (GBFS)
GBFS is a
non-metallic and essentially glassy material, that is developed in a molten
condition simultaneously with iron in a blast furnace and is subsequently
obtained by rapid cooling of the slag melt.
Ground
Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GGBFS)
GGBFS is granulated
blast furnace slag that is ground to appropriate fineness to be used as a
cementitious product.
Limestone
Limestone is a
sedimentary rock consisting predominantly of calcium carbonate, which has no
cementitious properties. Limestone is considered as MIC and other cementitious
materials where it is ground and blended together with clinker. Where it is
sold separately (both ground and unground) it is regarded as an aggregate.
Pozzolane
Pozzolane is a
material essentially originating from volcanic activity that in itself
possesses little or no cementitious value but that in finely divided form and
in the presence of moisture will chemically react with calcium hydroxide at
ordinary temperatures to form compounds possessing cementitious properties.
